Southern plantation owners saw African slaves as property, having the same value as an ox or horse. Southern politicians did their best to avoid talking about the actual horrors of chattel slavery, preferring instead to use euphemisms like “our peculiar institution.”

History tends to repeat itself. Today we see activists and groups that do their best to say that unborn babies aren’t really human, aren’t entitled to the same right to life as you or I, and that the law should allow them to be killed for the crime of being inconvenient. These activists do their best to avoid talking about the actual horrors of abortion, preferring instead to use euphemisms like “reproductive healthcare” or “a woman’s right to choose.”

Proponents of Proposition 1, the radical abortion initiative that threatens to roll back Idaho’s strong laws in defense of human life, want you to believe it’s about everything but abortion. Their literature and radio ads talk about choice, about freedom, and about healthcare—anything to avoid discussing the central fact of the matter: that abortion destroys an innocent human life.

The organization behind Prop 1 even sued our Attorney General and Secretary of State. Why? Because the language that they drafted for your ballot hits too close to home.

Supporters of Prop 1 don’t want you to know the truth. They don’t want you to know that Idaho’s current laws protect women who have complications like ectopic pregnancies. They don’t want you to know that Idaho’s current laws have exceptions for abortion in cases of rape, incest, and when necessary to save the life of the mother. They don’t want you to know that Prop 1 legalizes the killing of unborn babies.

It’s time to stop beating around the bush with carefully crafted euphemisms and tell it like it is. I just heard a Hollywood actress say that abortion was an “act of mercy.” What disgusting nonsense! Abortion is not mercy, it’s not healthcare, and it’s not a right—it’s murder, plain and simple.

More than a century ago, Americans fought a war that cost countless lives to end the peculiar institution of slavery, and it was many more years until the descendants of slaves were treated with equal dignity under the law. Here in Idaho, we outlawed the barbaric practice of abortion through the political process, without bloodshed. Today, our laws protect the unborn, and they protect women too. We must not turn back the clock to the time when the most innocent and vulnerable among us were treated as less than human just for the convenience of others.
