How Was Your Day?

It seems to me that it’s far too easy to get caught up in news cycles and politics at every level. Being engaged and informed matters—it’s our civic duty—but these things are not the most important part of life. The story below captures my thoughts about setting priorities and remembering what really counts.

When the final whistle blew at the Super Bowl and confetti rained down, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and his wife Stephanie sat quietly on the turf with their young baby boy, surrounded by chaos and security guards. At 39, he is the third youngest coach ever to win a Super Bowl. He had reached the mountaintop of his profession. Yet in that surreal moment, his wife asked only one question: “So how was your day?” They laughed, and together replied, “We don’t care.”

That simple exchange said more than any trophy speech ever could. They weren’t dismissing the victory or their hard work—they were placing it in perspective. Success, for all its glory, isn’t what gives meaning to our days. The “why” behind our work, our long hours, and our ambitions is found in the lives we share with the people we love

Barbara Bush once said, “What happens in your house is more important than what happens in the White House.” The McDonald’s reminded us that the same is true even on the biggest stage in sports.

And perhaps the famous Navy Admiral Daniel Gallery, when commanding his ships through war, understood it best. He told his chaplains to offer the same prayers before battle as on any ordinary day. That ritual reminded his sailors that every moment—whether mundane, momentous, or chaotic—is equally sacred.

The noise of the world will always surround us, but peace lies in the humility of daily gratitude. Whether you’re coaching in the Super Bowl or coaching Little League, the question remains the same—and maybe the answer should be, “We don’t care.”
