Editor:
The Founding Father’s principles of liberty are discussed in the book, “The 5000 Year Leap,” by W. Cleon Skousen.
These include: The genius of Natural Law; People remain free only if they are virtuous and moral; A free people cannot be maintained without religion; All things were created by God; therefore, we are dependent and responsible to Him; Virtuous leaders must be elected; All men are created equal; The proper role of government is to provide equal rights, not provided equal things; We are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights; The right to govern is vested in sovereign people’s authority; The USA shall be a Republic; The Constitution is structured to protect people from tyrannical rulers; Life and liberty are secure only so long as the right of property is secure; The highest level of prosperity is under a free market with few government regulations; The government should have three branches: legislative, executive and judicial with checks and balances to prevent abuse of power; A written Constitution is necessary; Only limited and carefully defined powers are delegated to government with all others retained by the people; Government to operate according to will of majority with minority rights protected; Strong local self-government is the keystone to preserving human freedom; A free people should be governed by law not the whims of men; “Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none;” The core unit of any society is the family; therefore, the government should protect its integrity; A Constitutionally educated public is necessary to remain free; The burden of debt is as destructive to freedom as subjugation by conquest; The USA has a manifest destiny to be a blessing to the entire human race.
The problems of this nation could be solved if we restored the principles of liberty contained in our US Constitution.
